Quantic And His Combo Barbaro - Tradition In Transition

Quantic is one of my favourite artists. In 2007 he moved to Columbia,
and this release in 2009 is the culmination of his Combo Bárbaro
(literally translating as ‘group of barbarians or people from outside
Europe’) of top, top quality musicians to perform his funk latin
american sound.

Quantic Presents Flowering Inferno - Death Of The Revolution

Quantic is undoubtedly one of my favourite artists. The latest release 'Death Of The Revolution' sees him dip into some reggae/dub inspired funk.

The whole thing was recorded in Columbia and inspired by mid-70's artists like Don Drummond and Bull Wackies; and also Columbian artists like Pedro Laza and Michi Sarmiento.

Released last summer on Tru Thoughts this album is full of surprises and well worth a listen.

This is the album titled track 'Death Of The Revolution'...

Belleruche - Turntable soul music

Belleruche are described by their record label, Tru Thoughts, as "handmade hip hop blues soul".

Their album 'Turntable Soul Music' provides a perfect mix of funk & soul.

If you like people like Quantic, Mr Scruff etc. you're in for a treat...

Baby Charles - This Time (I'm Gonna Try It My Way)

Just recently I made another fantastic discovery via emusic, a funk soul band by the name of Baby Charles.

Their self titled album released last year is described by the band as "simultaneously tight but loose, heavy but soulful and dirty... yet beautiful."

I love their version of DJ Shadow's 'This Time (I'm Gonna Try It My Way)', which if you don't know the original is a great record with a cool video...

Baby Charles' version...

Thier first single off the album is called 'Hard Man to Please'...

Curtis Mayfield - Give Me Your Love sample

This morning I was listening to Curtis Mayfield's legendary album "Superfly" from 1972 on my way to work, as you do, and suddenly a cheeky sample jumped out at me.

Unfortunately it was one of those samples where I could hear the part of the song that used it in my head, but had no clue as to the name of it or even the artist. Rage!

I knew it was a hip hop tune and after a quick Google search and a look on the awesome sample site The Breaks, I had to turn to a manual search through my library of mp3s.

Amazingly I some how managed to find it!

The original Mayfield track I'm referring to is called 'Give Me Your Love' and is well worth a listen. The sample is right at the beginning on 9 seconds.

The track that takes the sample is "Whassup With U?" ft. Keisha Shontelle by 9th Wonder from the quality album "The Formula".

Vicki Anderson - Message From The Soul Sisters

According to James Brown, Vicki Anderson was the best singer he ever witnessed. That's recommendation enough for me.

Check out this awesome funk tune 'Message from the soul sisters'...

Damn Girl

Treated myself to The Complete Mus-I-Col Recordings of JC Davis and the opening track after the intro just blew me away.

Timberlake fans might recognise 'A New Day (is Here at Last)' as 'Damn Girl'.

Just love the drums...

L.T.D. - Love To The World

Pure bad funk. Released 1976.

I'm sure the harmonies in the intro have been sampled in a hip-hop tune but I can't put my finger on it.

Wait for the drop around 3 mins...

Update...

Randomly listening to some tunes and found the one that samples that harmony. 'Ladder of Success' by DJ K.O.

Connie Price And The Keystones - Tell Me Something

Connie Price And The Keystones describe their sound as "Hip hop influenced cinematic soul music". This is one not to be missed!

Released on the brilliant Ubiquity record label just a few months back 'Tell Me Something' is pure funk soul with each track featuring a guest MC. The 2nd disc features instrumental versions of all the tracks for the purists.

The Keystones are a collection of session musicians brought together with various members having worked with Macy Gray, Breakstra, Madlib, The Daptones, El Michels Affair, Orgone... the list goes on. These guys are talented.

This is the track 'Master At Work Ft. Ohmega Watts'...
